Canopies weighed heavy
Laden with fruit
A haven of shadow
For lizard like newt
Ground rocky and arid
Water low away
Places to wander
And hide from my prey
Walls plastered white
Reflects back all heat
Great for climbing
To my ceiling seat

Great description of the critter and its surroundings.........interesting measle-y looking little guy. Wouldnt want him hanging from my ceiling!
ReplyDeleteIs it a gecko?
ReplyDelete"my ceiling seat"...got to love that! What a wonderful response to Hannah's challenge. :-)
Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your descriptions, Emma...I'd like to try out the skin of one of these guys...under the heavy laden olive groves!! Well done...thanks for posting for Real Toads TF!! :)
ReplyDeleteperhaps an iguana?
ReplyDeleteIs it a Mediterranean House Gecko?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your poem, Emma. It made me think of vines growing near our condo in the south of France near Perpignan.

I never thought of the gecko as quite so cheery despite many TV commercials with a speaking gecko (British accent) for Geico. I like it though and imagine he likes this environment.
ReplyDeleteSalamander? It does fascinate me, but I would probably scream if it crossed my path... (ceiling?)
ReplyDeleteWe have geckos and salamanders here... along with gila monsters, horned toads and dozens of lizard and snake species. But your poem took me back to Spain and Italy, where flora and architecture match your imagery to a t.
