Do you wish to be cured?
Of what?
Of depression
Oh yes, how I'd love that
Great, sign here.
What's all that small print
Nothing much, just some drawbacks
Drawbacks? What are they?
Nothing much, don't worry.
I'd like the full picture
You'll be cured, what else matters?
All of it, it's my life
But it's not worth much is it?
Yes, everything, to me
Oh, ok. You don't sound depressed.
Not enough to risk it all
Really, you don't want to be cured?
No, I change my mind
Ok, your choice, your life
Yes, my life, in all it's moods
My life, with ups and downs
My life, with meaning
My life, with something to give
My life, no cure needed
My life.

Lovely poem of acceptance. Many lives with all their bumps are indeed worth living without a "cure." But true clinical depression is not just ups and downs and moods--it does need a cure I think. Not like garden variety depression we all have now and then.
ReplyDeleteOh, those tough decisions! People do need to really look before they leap. I'm glad that your character chose life (warts and all) :-)
ReplyDeleteMy life, with something to give - and this poems gives so much and is a great inspiration and testament
ReplyDeleteWe do need to feel the ups and downs of life in order to learn, grow, progress, evolve. I agree with you there. I also agree with Libby regarding clinical depression. I know from personal experience. Once I finally agreed to treatment, my life became mine to experience. Prior to that, "the black dog" prevented my access to learning, growth, progress, evolution.
ReplyDeleteI like the back and forth conversation - almost as if to yourself trying to figure out just which way to go for your own cure.
ReplyDeleteaccepting everything as one whole life is sort of an ironic cure in itself.
ReplyDeleteVery thought-provoking!
ReplyDeleteReads very lyrical. A song that stays in your mind until you find yourself accepting the gifts life offers. Very healing.
