20th January 2012 Mark 3:13-19

Jesus Appoints the Twelve
Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him.  He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons. These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

I love reading this list of the twelve disciples; the apostles sent out to drive out demons and share the good news.  It's so full of hope and love and the future.  Through my own calling the passage has become more personal, reminding me of the calling every disciple of Christ has.

And what strikes me is not that they were all perfect but that they were far from Perfect, made mistakes and needed forgiveness.  As do we all, and it's given, to us all.

Jesus you call us and we do our best to respond; not as perfect beings but as men and women just like the twelve you called.  Thank you for calling us and accepting us as good enough.  Amen
