Today we celebrate St Matthew
the disciple,
the apostle,
the gospel writer,
the evangelist.
Matthew was chosen and called by Jesus to follow him in his ministry. Matthew was there throughout Jesus' preaching and teaching; he was there when miracles were performed, there when Jesus died and there when he was resurrected. Matthew saw it and lived it and felt it and knew it; then he wrote it all down for us to experience as well.
I adore the gospel of Matthew; it is the one that speaks the clearest to me and the one that inspires me; especially this passage
The Great Commission
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
It is fantastic to celebrate St Matthew today; but we are called to do so every day. Go make disciples. Don't hesitate; just follow as Matthew did.
