17th January 2012 Mark 2:23-end

Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath
One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.  The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”  He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”  Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.  So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

The sabbath was made for man; a day of rest from our toils; a day to focus on God and work on our relationship with him.

In our society, where so many have to work on the sabbath, this is good news.  If the sabbath was made for us then surely God waits for us to seek to spend time with him, whenever that might be.

I've always thought the idea of the sabbath was strange, that it almost stops the other days of the week being Godly days.  Today I feel heartened that in fact God gave us one day to be entirely with Him but that does not mean he's not waiting for us every other day.

Father you long for our company as we long for your presence.  Today we rejoice that you're waiting for Hs every day.  Amen
