An Englishman`s home is his castle
With walls that keep him safe
A moat will stop any invasion
The post cullis is a perfectly locked gate
Inside there's safety and protection
From the world and all that lies out there
But if he's not very careful
He'll build castle walls everywhere
Those walls will get ever closer
Giving protection from pain and hurt
One day he'll come to realise
He's built walls around his heart
Everything and everyone will be closed out
Even God will need an invite to come in
Sure he'll be protected and safe
But it'll be mighty lonesome within
So think before you build your barricade
Plan a door you can open wide
Allow God and others that love you
To come and visit you inside

Hi Emma, I do understand your desire to 'connect' here in the Imaginary Garden with your poem; but as I read it, it seems more about retreating inside oneself rather than reaching out to connect...except briefly at the very end.
Amen. Lovely.
So true, and what a lonely castle that would be.
Oh I love this. I have been both - the one hiding behind the walls and then the one who opened the door wide and let down the drawbridge........I totally relate to this poem. Wise advice! An open heart = happiness.
Indeed... once we open out heart to love, it will never close again but, walls keep up in prison as much as they keep others out.
Lovely poem.
Another example of the fact that fear is the opposite of love. Build those walls to protect from what frightens and effectively lock out love. Terrific metaphors.
It is quite sad when we allow ourselves to build walls around our hearts, our souls. Nicely done.
Wisely observed, wisely reported, and, I hope, wisely headed! Thank you for posting this!
A dead existence with walls around one's heart, no connections but echoes of oneself.
Wise words...a life lived behind walls is one of disconnect..
The connection is in the last stanza... don't forget to allow others into your heart.
