Overeating is an illness

Overeating is unglamorous
Unglamorous eating
Eating anything
Anything at all

Overeating is a mental illness
Mental illness is part of you
Part of you since forever
Forever; but no more

Overeating is an addiction
Addictions are an illness
Illness needs treatment
Treatment by doctors

Doctors don't know how to help
Help isn't easy to provide
Provide us with support
Support into recovery

Let us addicts see psychologists
Psychologists who really know
Know us what it is we feel
Feel and want to change

Every morning now I wake up
Wake up positive and hopeful
Hopeful for my choices
Choices in my life

No more do I fear me, myself
Myself or anything at all
All I do is choose life
Life, God and Love

I now know that I am allowed Love
Love to receive and love to give
Give help to those who eat
Eat too much or little

Stop calling us all the many names
Names to hurt and us to shame
Shame on you, try understand
Understand my pain

Next time you see me and my body
Body you think I can change
Change and know I'm trying
Trying day by day.

Overeating is a mental illness
Mental illness is part of you
Part of you since forever
Forever; but no more

This poem is from my soul;
inspired by my life,
my Overeating,
my addiction,
my recovery
and by the BBC programme "From addiction to recovery" by Russell Brand.

Do you think overeating can be a form of self-medication, soothing uncomfortable feelings? We all have ways of coping with uncomfortable feelings. Some people drink, some take drugs, some exercise excessively and some eat. We do what works to make ourselves feel better. x

Absolutely, and that is what needs treating. The mental health and emotional issues are as real a health need as anything physical. psychologists should be made available to help those people who aren't able to process their feelings; it's a health issue. This is what the twelve step programmes do; they get to the root of the issues and help people learn to love and live and process better. Thanks for your comment Debbie
