23rd February 2012 Luke 9:22-25

And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”  Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.  For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.  What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?

These words and this message were some of the hardest to accept when I first heard my calling; give up my life to be a disciple, whoa! That's so much, too much. I had a great friend who reassured me that God wouldn't ask me to give up everything He'd given me. That giving up a life doesn't necessarily mean what I thought it did.

Now, four years later, I can see how my life has been changed and what I've given up. I can see the blessing that this is and what I have gained and given in its place. Today if you read these words and fear them then please be assured that I'd follow my call again!

Jesus your words and wise but scary, help us move through the fear and follow you anyway. Amen.
